Its concentration reaches its peak during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, particularly from day 19 to day 22. Progesterone plays several essential roles in the female reproductive system. It prepares the inner lining of the uterus, known as the endometrium, for potential implantation of a fertilized egg. Additionally, it inhibits further ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to penetrate. If fertilization does not occur, the level of progesterone drops, leading to the onset of menstruation.
