Rib cage known as thoracic cage is formed by vertebral column, ribs and sternum. It encloses the heart, big blood vessels and lungs and protects them from damage. There are 24 ribs in human. Rib cage is attached by muscles of the neck, thorax, abdomen and back and covered by the fascia and the skin.
Rib cage pain can happen. The pain can be sharp, dull or achy. It can be caused by heart and lung conditions, fracture of ribs and other bone conditions. The xiphoid process is the lower end of the sternum provides an important attachment point for the tendons of the diaphragm, rectus abdominis, and transverse abdominis muscles.
