Acupuncture helps reducing pain in kidney stones

Kidney stones are stone-like lumps that develop in the kidneys. This is caused by that the waste products in the blood can occasionally form crystals accumulated in the kidneys. These crystals may build up to form a hard stone-like lump. To avoid getting kidney stones, it is important to drink plenty of water every day and prevent dehydration. This will keep your urine diluted and prevent kidney stone formation. If there is a kidney stone, your body will pass it out of the body in urine by passing through the urinary system (the kidneys, kidney tubes and bladder. Small stones may be passed out painlessly in the urine and may be unnoticed. If a stone is big enough to block the urinary system, often in the ureter or the urethra part, it will cause severe pain which typically starts in the side or back and radiates to lower abdomen or groin or urinary tract infection. Kidney stones are a common condition affecting 2-3% population and they are recurrent. Acupuncture can help to reduce the pain caused by the kidney stones and can reduce and amount of analgesic reagents used in the patients with kidney stones. A study on 102 patients from Germany showed that the analgesic effect of acupuncture was significantly superior to the effect of analgesics.
