Numbness on toes and feet, what to do?
Numbness is a loss of sensation or feeling in a part of the body. It's often accompanied by other abnormal sensations, such as a pins-and-needles feeling, burning or tingling. Numb toes and feet are a common problem which generally affects the nerves that supply the toes and feet. The sensory nerves to the toes and feet receive stimulus such as pressure and temperature and send signal to the brain. If the nerve is damaged, the signals are no longer sent to the brain. In this case numbness occurs and the toes and feet are no longer feeling sensation such as touch, heat or cold. Usually this is caused by peripheral nerve damage to the toes and feet. It is rarely caused by the spinal cord or the brain. The numbness of the toes and feet can be often caused by the injury to the toes feet, hips and low back. Generally numbness is not life threatening and some people with numbness don’t bother to get it treated, but numb toes and feet do need to be checked out to find out what the cause is and be treated to prevent further damage due to lack of sensation which increases the chance of injury. Acupuncture can help nerve recovery and improve the numbness.
